For thousands of years, Jews have sung Psalms 113-118 at Passover. When Matthew tells us that Jesus sang a hymn with his disciples after the Passover meal the night he was arrested, he sang Psalm 113 (Matthew 26:30). And for good reason. This Psalm immediately ushers us into the glorious transcendent reality of God, while at the same time brings God intimately close. You need this Psalm! I need this Psalm. Let’s pray it together in this episode. Psalm 113 ESV 1 Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD! 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore! 3 From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised! 4 The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! 5 Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, 6 who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? 7 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, 8 to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. 9 He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD! Matthew 10:29–31 NIV 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Philippians 2:5–9 NIV 5 Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.
