2008/2009 Scripture Memory Program
Our new Scripture Memory Program is becoming an important part of life at The Crossing. Memorizing Bible verses allows us to grow closer to God as we think about his truth throughout the day. Please take a moment to read through these questions that explain the program and consider participating in it with us.
Q: What is The Crossing’s Scripture Memory Program?
A: The Crossing’s Scripture Memory Program helps people of all ages to memorize portions of the Word of God. We are encouraging the whole church to memorize 24 passages of Scripture between September 1, 2008 and August 31, 2009.
Q: Why is scripture memory important?
A: The Bible changes how we think, what we believe, and how we live. One of the most effective ways of incorporating God’s words into our lives is to memorize small sections of it. Memorizing helps us to slow down and think more deeply about a passage, which increases our understanding. It also equips us to apply Scripture in the “every day” situations of life.
For this next year we are focusing on verses that teach us about God. Knowing these truths about God will fuel our worship, enhance our prayers, and build our faith as we learn to trust God in all aspects of life.
Q: Why memorize scripture as a church?
A: We believe that active involvement in a church is essential for spiritual growth. One of the ways we care for one another in the body is by purposefully encouraging each other to pursue Christ through the regular taking in and applying of God’s Word. Scripture memory is a great tool for doing this, but many find it challenging to do on their own. Memorizing as a church allows us to benefit from the encouragement and practical help of others. It also creates opportunities to remind one another of biblical truth and share stories of how God is using these truths in our lives.
Q: How can I take part?
A: Simply by keeping up with each new verse. You can do this in many ways:
Worship Folder. Each week’s passage will be printed in the worship folder you receive on Sunday morning.
Information Table. You can pick up a printed copy of all the verses at the Information Table.
Verse Cards. A set of cards is available for $1.00 at our Bookstore. These cards have all of the passages for 2008/2009 that you can carry with you throughout the day.
The Crossing’s Website. You can download all of the verses below.
If you join the program in the middle, you can jump in by memorizing the current verse and continuing on schedule with the rest of the church.
Q: What verses are the children memorizing?
A: Elementary and Preschool age children are memorizing the same verses as the adults in their Crossing Kids classes. Our desire is to have families memorize these verses together.
Q: What are some tips to help me memorize the verses?
A: Here’s one effective method for memorizing Scripture:
Read the passage several times without trying to memorize it.
Repeat the passage aloud, working on one phrase at a time. Once you’ve memorized one phrase go on to the next until you know the whole passage. When you recite your verse, always begin and end with the reference.
Write the passage down. This will help you review and concentrate more intently on what you want to remember.
Review regularly. Go over new verses every day, even several different times during the day if possible. Take your cards with you. Review while exercising, folding laundry, waiting in line, etc.
Partner up. Find someone you can recite your verse to each week. Make this a standing appointment. (For example, each Sunday morning at church, at small group, or a phone call every Friday afternoon.) Knowing you’ve made this commitment will increase your motivation and help you stick with the program long term. It will also be a great encouragement to your partner.
